The main purpose of a body scan is to heighten awareness of the body. You can either sit or lay down for this exercise. It is important to pay attention to all sensations during the scan, painful or enjoyable. When strong, and sometimes unwanted, sensations arise it is helpful to both try and understand the origin of the pain better and notice what other feelings are evoked from these sensations. If the sensations are too strong try to turn your attention to another area of the body, but do not completely avoid the previous area, as it is imperative to acknowledge the pain is present before moving on.
